Prof. (Dr.) R. Venkata Rao, born on 15th March, 1954, is the Chairperson, Vivekananda School of Law and Legal Studies and Vivekananda School of English Studies (Vivekananda Institute of Professional Studies, New Delhi). Prior to this he served as Vice Chancellor of the National Law School of India University Bangalore.
He assumed the office of the Vice Chancellor of National Law School of India University, Bangalore on 11th May, 2009. After the completion of his 1st term on 10th May 2014, his appointment as Vice Chancellor has been renewed for another five years from 11th May 2014. National Law School of India University, Bangalore is the premier centre of Legal Education.
After serving for ten years two months and twenty one days as Vice Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) R Venkata Rao has laid down the office of Vice Chancellor, National Law School of India University, Bengaluru on 1st August 2019. After having relocated to Delhi, Prof. Rao has assumed the office of Chairperson, Vivekananda School of Law and Legal Studies and Vivekananda School of English Studies (Vivekananda Institute of Professional Studies, New Delhi) on 16th September 2019.
Prof. Rao’s academic qualifications are B.A.(Hons.) Litt., M.A. (Litt), M.L. and Ph.D and LL.D (Honoris Causa) 2017 – Utkal University. He was awarded Prof. N.R. Madhava Menon Best Law Teacher Award for the year2018. To date, he has 42 years of teaching and research experience.
He has the distinction of serving the Statutory Bodies of almost all the Law Schools in the Country. Besides, he is a member of Board of Governors of Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs, New Delhi. He has served as Independent Director in prestigious Public Sector Undertakings like, Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL), Bangalore, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), Bangalore, Goa Shipyard Ltd, Goa. He is also a member of different committees in Bar Council of India and is associated with prestigious bodies like UPSC, State Service Commissions, UGC and NAAC among others. He has delivered 10 endowment lectures and 8 Convocation Address to date.
He has the distinction of receiving Gold Medal for the Best Ph.D. Thesis from the Andhra University in 1993, the Best Researcher Award from the Andhra University in 2003, the Best Teacher Award from the Government of Andhra Pradesh in 2006, he has been awarded the “Best Vice Chancellor Award for Outstanding Contribution to Education” during the World Chancellors and Vice Chancellor’s Congress- 2014 held on 27th June 2014 at Mumbai, Amity University, Noida, awarded “Amity Academic Excellence Award” twice, once in 2017 for the most distinguished contribution towards propagation of doctrine of knowledge, at the 17th International Business Summit & Research Conference INBUSH-ERA and again in 2019. He has been awarded Prof. N.R. Madhava Menon Best Law Teacher Award for the year 2018 under the aegis of Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF) and Menon Institute of Legal Advocacy Training (MILAT) for outstanding services to the promotion of quality legal education. Prof. (Dr.) R Venkata Rao has been awarded Attorney General K Parasaran Award for Outstanding scholarship in Legal Education awarded in July 2019 by the Capital Foundation Society, New Delhi. He has authored 6 books and published more than 130 papers.
He has successfully guided 3 LL.Ds and 19 Ph.Ds. He has visited more than 30 countries for his academic and research activities. He was the Member of Board of Governors of Asia Law Institute (ASLI) for the year 2010-2011
Prof. (Dr.) Rakesh Bhatnagar is currently the Vice Chancellor, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi and Fellow of Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi, Indian Academy of Science, Bangalore and National Academy of Science, Allahabad.

Prof. (Dr.) Rakesh Bhatnagar pursued his Ph.D. from the Department of Biochemistry, National Sugar Institute, Kanpur followed by working in Freiburg University, Germany, University of Caen, France and NIH & USAMRIID, USA.
He pioneered the teaching of Biotechnology at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, the first of its kind in the country. Prof. Bhatnagar is well known for developing recombinant vaccine against anthrax. This technology has been transferred to the industry and the vaccine is undergoing human clinical trials.
Prof. Bhatnagar (a former Vice Chancellor of Kumaun University, Nainital) in addition to being J. C. Bose Fellow, he is an elected Fellow of all three major Science Academies of India and received the Innovation award from the President of India in 2016. With >170 research papers to his credit, his publications have received >5000 citations. He has supervised more than 58 Ph.D students and has been able to attract research funding of about equivalent more than 35 Crore. Prof. Bhatnagar’s research has been ranked 7th (The first six were from Pasteur Institute, Harvard Medical School, NIH and USAMRIID) in the anthrax research globally. Recognizing with extraordinary contribution in the field of research and innovation he has been award with many prestigious awards and recognition few of them are President’s Award for Best Innovation by President of India, ICMR Award for Outstanding research work in the field of Immunology by ICMR, GoI; Ranked 7th among the top ten eminent researchers publishing commendable research papers on anthrax by Open source Global Anthrax Research Literature etc. He is fellow of Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi, Indian Academy of Science, Bangalore, National Academy of Science, Allahabad.
Prof. Bhatnagar has been a successful administrator and institution builder. He has served the university at various important positions like Chairperson, Director and Dean. Because of his efforts School of Biotechnology has been ranked at No.1 biotechnology teaching programme in the country consistently. He has created a world class Biological Safety Laboratory Level III.
Presently, Prof. Bhatnagar is presently holding the position of Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University and during past one year he has strived hard to take the University to a new level of excellence.
Sumeet Malik is currently a Director of the EBC Group. He is the Editor, SCC Online and Associate Editor, Supreme Court Cases (SCC). He graduated in from National Law School India University, Bangalore in 1999 and holds a LLM in IP from University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law. An Advocate at the Hon’ble Supreme Court and a noted author, he has written acclaimed books such as “Thus Spake Their Lordships”, “Law Lexicon” and “Supreme Court on Words and Phrases”.
Advocate N.L. Rajah is a designated Senior Advocate of the Madras High Court. He is also a Founding Director of the Nani Palkhivala Arbitration Centre. A noted writer, he has also been a member of the Arbitration Committee under the Law Commission of India and a trustee of the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation.

Mr. N.L. Rajah is a designated Senior Advocate practising in the Madras High Court. He was called to the bar in 1986 and started his practice under Mr. S. Govind Swaminadhan, former Advocate General of Tamil Nadu. He has a very extensive exposure in the field of Writs, Original side, Drafting and Conveyancing, Arbitration, Consumer Protection Laws and Energy Laws.
Mr. Rajah is a former President of the Madras Consumer Courts Bar Association and a former trustee and currently advisor of the Citizen, Consumer and Civic Action Group, an Organization which is dedicated to creating awareness among consumers about their rights and helps them realize the same.
He is an invitee of the International Visitorship Programme of the U.S.Government in the year 2000. In May 2013 he participated in a week long deliberation of the United Nations (UNCITRAL) to bring out a model contract to regulate Online Dispute Resolutions.
He was co-opted by Justice D.P. Wadhwa, former judge of the Supreme Court of India to be part of a committee appointed by the Supreme Court to prepare and submit a report to the Supreme Court on the effectiveness of the Public Distribution System in Tamil Nadu.
He is a Founding Director of the Nani Palkhivala Arbitration Centre, a Centre recognised by the Madras High Court to render administrative assistance in arbitration matters. He is also a trustee of the Palkhivala Foundation.
He was member of the committee formed by the Law Commission of India to suggest changes and amendments to the Arbitration and Conciliation Act 1996. The deliberations of this committee were published as the 246th report of the Law Commission.
Mr. Rajah has co-authored the book ‘Consumer Protection in India’ with Justice D.P. Wadhwa, retired judge of the Supreme Court of India and published by Lexis Nexis.
He has published a book on the history of the Madras High Court titled “ A 150 year journey from a crown court to a people’s court”. On the occasion of the 125th year celebrations of the Madras High Court buildings, he has assisted the Heritage Committee of the Madras High Court to edit and bring out a book titled “An Iconic splendour” on the heritage value of the Madras High Court Buildings.
He is one of the “Principal Contributors” to the book “Courts of India” published by the Supreme Court of India and released on 26th Nov. 2016 by the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India.
He is also trustee of the renowned M.S.Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) which is an agricultural research Institute. He is a former member of the advisory committee of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission. He is also member of the management committee of the National College, Trichy which is one of the oldest educational institutions in Tamil Nadu and was founded by his family in 1919.
He was recently awarded the “Service award” by Sri Ramakrishna Vivekananda Trust for his service without expectation to the Cancer Institute and Avvai Home orphanage. In Dec 2019 he was awarded the Living Legend of Law award by the Bar Association of India.
He has written several articles in law journals as well in newspapers like “The Hindu”, “Times of India”, “Indian Express” etc.
Dr. Ruchi Pant is currently the Head, Natural Resource Management and Biodiversity Programme, United Nations Development Programme. Formerly, she was a Visiting Law Fellow at UC Berkeley School of Law, University of California, Berkeley.

He has served in Africa, Europe, Asia and North America at senior levels, and has served as a legal advisor in the Israel Defense Forces and to various diplomatic negotiations during thirty years of civil service. He currently acts as a neutral mediator for cross-border commercial disputes involving India, Israel and the United States.
Ambassador Kanafi was born to Jewish parents in New York City. Upon completing his secondary studies at Hunter College High School – ranked consistently as the best high school in the United States, public or private – Ambassador Kanafi was accepted to the Law Faculty of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel, and, in parallel, to the Academic Reserve programme of the Israel Defense Forces. The Hebrew University is ranked first of all Faculties of Law in the world where the language of instruction is not English (Shanghai Ranking, 2020). During his studies, Ambassador Kanafi was Cases Editor of the Israel Law Review (Israel’s only English-language law review at the time) and published a number of articles therein. He was also an Oralist on Israel’s national team to the Jessup Moot Court Competition in 1989. He was called to the Bar in Israel in 1990. He is a member of the Bar of Israel and of New York State (USA). Upon completion of his Law studies, Menahem Kanafi was commissioned as an officer in the Israel Defense Forces and served variously as a Legal Officer and Senior Legal Advisor.
After demobilisation with the rank of Captain, Menahem Kanafi began a 25-year long career as a professional diplomat. In his overseas assignments, he served as Second Secretary in Harare, Zimbabwe; First Secretary in the Embassy of Israel in Germany in Bonn (and later Berlin); Deputy Chief of Mission in Ankara, Turkey; Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the State of Eritrea; Ambassador to the Republic of Ghana; and Consul-General to South India resident in Bengaluru.
During his posting at the Embassy of Israel in Germany, Mr Kanafi served as Legal Advisor of the Government of Israel delegation to the Negotiations for the Establishment of the Compensation Fund for Nazi-Era Forced and Slave Labourers and was instrumental in achieving a 5-billion Euro settlement for the survivors of Nazi atrocities and establishment of a Future Fund.
Mr Kanafi was a member of his country’s delegations to the 57th and 59th UNGA in New York, as representative of Israel to the Special Political and Decolonization Committee (Fourth Committee). He was further awarded a citation in 2005 as Outstanding Diplomat of the Year for his work on the team which initiated and brought about the convening of the 28th Special Session of the UNGA commemorating the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps. During this time, he also attended the Hague Academy of International Law, the Canadian Defence Forces Peace Operations Summer Institute, and was a UN UNITAR/OLA Fellow in International Law.
Over the course of his career, Ambassador Kanafi negotiated many international agreements, the most important of which include: the Civil provisions of the 1995 Interim Agreements with the Palestine Liberation Organisation (Oslo II agreements); the Forced Labourer Compensation agreement noted above, and an agreement for the establishment of a joint Research and Development Fund between the Government of Israel and the Government of Karnataka (KIRD).
Upon retirement in 2015, Ambassador Kanafi established a mediation practice and qualified for inclusion on the list of court-appointed mediators in Israel, and has since developed his practice as a third-party neutral in commercial matters. He specialises in cross-border disputes involving Israeli, Indian and American parties. Ambassador Kanafi’s pro bono legal activities include serving as an advisor to MP Michal Rozin on matters of immigration and asylum for African refugees; as an advisor to the Hotline for Refugees and Migrants in Israel; and on the Advisory Boards of several Indian legal and commercial organisations
